Phil Alley ‘12 catches a lobster by hand.
Once again in January of 2009, fourteen members of the sailing team rented two Beneteau 393’s out of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and sailed across the Gulf Stream at night to the Bimini Islands of the Bahamas. The team visited the quaint town of Alice Town, the rocky, but spectacular Gun Cay, and the half sunken Sapona wreck.

Three Mahi-Mahi were caught as well as 7 spiny lobsters. The team had a great time snorkeling in a beautiful reef, sailing in the stream and dodging dozens of cruise ships that ply along the Florida coast.

Winter Trip:  Dry Tortugas (Jan 2008)
In January 2008, eight members of the sailing team rented a Beneteau 473 out of Key West, FL and sailed to the Dry Tortugas, a national park 70 miles to the west of Key West. The team visited the Civil War era fort in the national park, picnicked on a deserted island, and had rollicking good sailing conditions of 20-25 knots from the east and temperatures in the mid seventies. The boat did have some problems though including head troubles, battery troubles and a clogged bilge pump, all of which were dealt with accordingly. Other highlights included a pod of 30 dolphins, a sea turtle, a 25 pound tuna, and some fantastic snorkeling.

For spring break 2007, seven boats worth of Cornell sailors travelled down to South Carolina for some sun and sailing. Fourteen sailors piled into three cars and made the long drive from Ithaca to Charleston to practice in the warm weather to get geared up for the second half of the spring season.  The adventure started on the drive down with a massive snow storm coinciding with much of the drive.  The wicked weather made the escape to the South that much nicer.

Sailors rented several cabins in a campground in Charleston and sailed out of Charleston Community Boating. The team got plenty of practice in the center’s 420s and enjoyed some coach- ing from All American Mike Miller. The team worked on plenty of drills during their sailing sessions, as well as both fleet and team racing. The practice sessions helped the team polish up on their racing skills that had gotten a bit dusty over the winter. It was a few sailors’ first time in a boat since the end of the fall season, since our boats at Cornell were still inside, protected from the two feet of snow on the ground! The trip also featured plenty of team bonding, and was overall a great success.
