Fall 2013 Alumni Regatta

October 5th, 2013
Conditions:
Once again, sailors returned to Ithaca in the rain.  A future concern may be that we will not recognize the town in the sunshine.  We awoke on Saturday morning to fog, drizzle and wind of about .000001.  We thought we saw some movement in the trees, but it was just more rain.  Hope spring eternal, so we set out in a light breeze around 11:30 (prompting some some sarcastic requests for a heavier crew).

Surprisingly, the wind filled in, blew the clouds away and soon we were hiking out in 12 knots, with gusts bringing some white caps.  "Yee-haw" said more then one skipper.  "Yikes that wave was cold" said more then one crew.
The wind held out for most of the afternoon and the alumni ended the day battered, bruised, soaked but smiling.

Weekend Format:
Without pesky homecoming activities to get in the way, sailing commenced at the quite reasonable hour of 11:30 on Saturday.  Earlier would not have been feasible, not only due to the lack of wind, but due to the enthusiastic participation in the party the night before.  Note, nothing cures a hangover like a nice stiff breeze.  While we appreciated the team racing sails, the day was limited to fleet racing.  Sailing was followed by BBQ, games and general merriment at the boat house, before the party returned to collegetown.
Word on the street is that state street diner may have burned down?  We couldn't take any risks so we had Sunday brunch (aka bacon) at the house.  Yum.

Race Results:
1st Place:  Phil Alley '12 and Greg Reppucci '15
2nd Place:  Lauren Turner '13 and Martha Peterson '12 and Della Brandt '13 (there was some crew swapping)
3rd Place:  Hillary Paulsen '13 and Michael Rivlin '13
Sports Award:  Jon Goldmith '12 and Martha Peterson '12
Heaviest Boat:  Skipper  (When the race committee went to re-position their boat, they discovered their anchor was snagged... on another anchor)

Special Thanks:

Fall 2012 Alumni Regatta: Report

Alumni regatta Report – Fall 2012
September 22, 2012

Conditions:
Alumni arrive in Ithaca to a torrential downpours on Friday night, but by 10am on Saturday morning the clouds were starting to clear.    The morning wind lasted until around 2pm, and then died, but returned from the North around 5-10 knots by 4pm, just as the team was arriving eager for some racing (and hamburgers).  As the sun sank low over the "blue waves" of Cayuga, we had some excellent sailing.

Weekend Format:
On Saturday morning, while non-dedicated sailors went off to the football game, a select group of true believers headed down to the lake to take out a big boat (thanks Pat for letting us use the Ranger!)  We had a few nice hours with limited sun showers, before the wind totally died and the true believers headed off to find lunch and a nap.

By 4pm the full team (well, a decent amount of the team) gathered at the boat house.  Although many of the undergrads were off racing at away events, the alumni filled in the gaps and sent 12 boats out to sail.  Competition was fierce, but friendly and most of the insults on the water were good-natured.

Racing was followed by the now-traditional BBQ, unfortunately by the time everyone was fed, it was too dark for the almost-traditional alumni regatta photo.  Next year.

Sunday morning was complete with the sorta-traditional (but remarkably hard to organize) brunch at State Street Diner.

Race Results:

Special Thanks (as always) to the organizers, alumni coordinator and race committee, including:   Becca Macies '14, Greg Reppucci '15, Taylor Wright '16, Colin Keil '15, Max Joh-Carnella '16, and David Sternau '15.

Fall 2010 Alumni Regatta: Report

Alumni regatta Report – Fall 2010
October 2, 2010

Conditions:
Thursday rain storms cleared for a windy day on Friday with gusts in the upper 20s out of the North and a perfectly sunny fall day on Saturday with mild wind with maybe 12knot puffs out of the Northwest.  The normally clear blue waters of Cayuga were unusually cloudy with sediment from the heavy rains, but with blue skies, puffy clouds and the trees just starting to change, it was still a “gorges” scene.  Additionally, many people enjoyed AppleFest in the Commons.

Weekend Format:
On Friday afternoon early arrivals joined the team for a dingy practice, and a larger crew took the big boat out for a short but exciting cruise in winds that gusted up to the upper 20s.  Saturday was better for competitive dingy sailing, and twelve boats enjoyed a few hours of racing before a bbq and team meeting.  Alumni noticed a significant difference of a much closer fleet this year even in the more casual conditions of the weekend and were pleased to see results from the coach already.

Unfortunately the new coach Brian, was unavailable this weekend, but alumni enjoyed hearing about him from the rest of the team.  At the meeting Captain Vince Andrews presented a positive report of the transition to being a coached team, and alumni expressed their excitement and interest in hearing more frequent updates on the team.  We hope to see more pictures too of the current team on the water!

Race Results:
Sportsmanship award:  Mrs. Brandt and Blair Davis
Crew Award:  Beth Brown ‘10 (for her amazing comeback in the last race where crew / skipper switched)

Special Thanks to Race Committee:  Conner Fitzpatrick ’13, and Colleen Cozzens ’12;  to our mark boats:  Vince Andrews ‘11, Jon Goldsmith ‘12, and Skipper (who also took some great photos!).  Also thanks to the sailing house for another great party!
